Did you know that pets account for 22% of the UK's meat consumption?

If only we could feed tasty meat to our pets without the welfare and climate concerns of industrial meat farming. Oh but hang on.... now there is a way!

Our client Meatly has launched the very first cultivated meat pet food (first for cats - dogs will follow) using chicken meat that's been grown from a sample of cells taken from a chicken egg.

With a brilliant launch article in yesterday's Sunday Times (well done, team!) you can learn all about it 😺 (also listen to founder and CEO Owen Ensor giving an interview on Times Radio Sunday 17th March around 3.25pm!).

Don’t call me ‘girl’ — rethinking how brands use this word

What is it with the word ‘girl’?

On social media, we’ve had ‘lazy girl summers’ and ‘hot girl walks’, strawberry girls, lemon girls and many other varieties of fruit-related girls. At the airport we might pick up a copy of Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train, or The Girl that saw that other Girl doing something very Bad (I made the last one up but it probably does exist on Amazon).

100+ million users in 5 days. Now that the dust has settled, how do we feel about Threads?

As many others have mentioned, Threads feels like the very early days of Twitter or initial status updates on Facebook.  Right now it's chaotic, but also friendly, kind, and collaborative, the lack of curation is equal parts annoying and exciting.

Communities are developing around many things, with creatives coming together and discovering that they can build some more meaningful relationships with people they admire and follow on Instagram beyond a simple like or quick comment, you can discover the person behind the content.  Of course, celebrity is inescapable, with Kim Kardashian perhaps unsurprisingly being the most followed person on the platform with over 4.5million followers (in second place is Selena Gomez, followed by MrBeast if you’re interested in this sort of thing)

But realistically the battle for Meta will be when the real world kicks in and the honeymoon period potentially ends, nobody doubts that ads will eventually make their way to the platform, that is Meta’s business at the end of the day, and we will see the trolls, the bots and probably the polarisation on issues that plague Twitter.  At the moment Meta has the fastest-growing product in history, full of positivity, but how can they maintain that? The key will be how they manage all of these things, via algorithms, community management, etc.

There are some functionality issues, as Threads is part of your Instagram, once you create a Threads account you can’t delete it without deleting your Instagram account - for now. A temporary solution is to deactivate it which will make it and your content undiscoverable but won’t affect your Instagram account. New features are coming, Adam Mosseri (@mosseri on Threads), Head Of Instagram, has confirmed that the company is working on a separate timeline for people you follow, and in chronological order, edit functions, account switching, hashtags, & search amongst other things. Billed as an “initial version” at launch, it was never pitched as being a fully completed app, the aim here was to capitalise on the current mood around Twitter and launch as soon as possible, so ‘make it work, make it great, make it grow’ wasn’t followed in this instance.

The majority of your audience will be your existing Instagram followers initially, an overlap between platforms probably not seen before.  If they are getting your visual content through images and video on Instagram, then what will you offer them that adds value to the relationship you want to have with them?  Now’s the ideal time to test and learn, and give your community managers free rein to do their job, engage with your audience, read the room, and post without tying them up in layers of sign-off requirements.

Earthtopia visits Nike's European Logistics Campus

Our Head of Earthtopia, Rob, is fresh off the Eurostar after visiting Nike’s European Logistics Campus (ELC) outside Antwerp. Earthtopia was invited by Nike to learn more about its Move to Zero commitment.

The day began on the 'H₂ Barge 1', the world’s first hydrogen-powered inland container ship, which will deliver Nike products from Rotterdam up waterways to the ELC with zero CO2 emissions.

We were then given a tour of Nike's distribution facility and shown some of the ways the company is reducing waste in the packaging process and its recycled products range.

Rob then won 'best patchwork' with his rendition of planet Earth stitched onto his tote bag during a garment-repair workshop!

The trip ended with a panel discussion on what's next for the business, including Noel Kinder, Nike’s Chief Sustainability Officer and circular expert Connor Hill.

Rob said of the trip 'it was great to see up close the steps Nike is taking to reduce waste and innovate at its distribution centre. I'd love to see more of the process behind turning old Nike shoes into running tracks, new shoes and football pitches - but that might involve a trip further than the Eurostar goes!'

Launch of 33_Zero

Huge news - we’re proud to announce the official launch of our new in-house strategy consultancy, 33_Zero, which specialises in helping brands and technology companies to thrive in a net zero culture.

With the urgency for businesses to innovate to meet net zero goals, 33_Zero helps clients to understand and engage with influential Gen Z and Millennial audiences, who are driving the ‘normalisation’ of sustainable practices. Using this knowledge, we then support companies to plan, adapt and position products and services to more rapidly achieve acceptance and adoption.

To mark the launch, we’ve also commissioned a new research study through our TikTok brand, Earthtopia - one of the biggest eco-communities on the platform. The qualitative and quantitative study interviewed some of our community members, and through research partner, Untold, we surveyed 1,000 UK and 1,000 US 16-40 year olds to ask how sustainability affects their purchasing decisions.

The findings have been collated into a new in-depth report called ‘A Window on Net Culture’, which is released today and can be downloaded here for free.

Corporate Content Awards Winner!

We’re delighted to announce that we’ve won Gold in the ‘Best Celebrity Influencer’, and Bronze in the ‘Best Use of Data’ categories at the Corporate Content Awards 2023 for our work with leading climate action platform Ecologi

Leveraging Earth Day as a hook, The ‘Power of Possible’ campaign focused on understanding the attitudes and challenges faced by businesses in implementing sustainability measures, plus explored potential solutions.

To achieve this, the campaign was underpinned by a dynamic research report, including an interactive quiz asking readers ‘Can you run an eco-friendly business?’

Celebrity ambassador Steven Bartlett was then an ideal fit to amplify the insight gained from the research and reach the core target audience of business decision makers. In total, more than 140 pieces of coverage were secured across target media outlets, including The Sunday Times, The Daily Mirror and The Daily Express.

Our influencer predictions for 2023

With the influencer landscape ever-changing and brands forecasted to allocate more budget on influencer activations, we wanted to share our predictions for what 2023 will bring…

Micro and nano influencers
Brands are prioritising engagement rates over follower count, so we’ll see more spend going towards micro and nano influencers where engagement rates are much higher.

Authenticity and niches
Some influencer-focussed brands’ revenue has declined, such as Morphe who closed stores at the beginning of the year. We’ll see more brands implement influencer activity as part of a 360 campaign, but also target niche influencers to provide further credibility.

Video content and spend on TikTok
Video content will continue to grow and outperform static content. Brands will invest more in TikTok, and because of this investment it’s likely we’ll see an increase in influencer’s fees for TikTok content.

Virtual Influencers
We’ve seen brands such as Prada, Samsung, and Kellogg’s launch into the Metaverse, release virtual influencers and NFTs. Brands will only continue to expand their digital presence to showcase products to a wider audience.

Monetizing their influence
More influencers will choose long standing partnerships over small-scale content creation to drive authenticity, but we’ll also see influencers expanding their offering to monetize their influence further with the likes of consultancy work and merch.

CNN and The Gadget Show coverage

We were thrilled to secure coverage in tier 1 business outlet and broadcast channel, CNN for our client, Ivy Farm Technologies. Following a visit to Ivy Farm’s pilot plant in Oxford, CNN’s camera crew filmed the site and spoke with members of the Ivy Farm team about the future of cultivated meat. This required a lot of planning and preparation, so we were delighted to secure an article and video that went live on CNN Business.

We were also really pleased to land coverage for our client, WeAre8, on Channel 5’s The Gadget Show, which received a glowing review from top consumer journalist, Harry Wallop. Harry unpacked the great features that WeAre8 offers, and the positivity of the content, and he signaled that the app is the potential future of digital advertising and social media.

Whilst December can be a quiet month in the PR world, it’s great to see two of our clients have such highly influential and top-tier coverage. It definitely ends 2022 on a high note!

The Drum Awards for Social Media

As an agency that specialises in Entertainment, we are delighted to have won 'Best Entertainment Campaign' for our work with Sky TV at The Drum Awards for Social Media today!

We worked with Sky to build hype, interest and engagement on social for several documentary titles they launched last year. To ensure our formats would engage lovers of factual TV, we used social listening to uncover 'the real reasons' people watch documentaries. This led us to 4 clearly defined, impactful and adaptable content formats that could be used interchangeably across several genres, social channels and placements to bring the topics to life, ultimately driving engagement, conversation and tune-in. The content surpassed KPIs and helped to achieve Sky's objective to become known as the home of factual content on social media.

We loved working on this campaign with our clients at Sky and we're excited for more success with them in the future!

WeAre8

You may have seen the bright yellow posters promoting WeAre8, alongside Rio Ferdinand, displayed all over the London underground and around the city recently. WeAre8 is a tech for good company we’ve been proudly working with since March this year, implementing an 'always on' press office, and getting some fantastic coverage as a result of proactive media pitching.

For those of you that don’t know, WeAre8 is the ground-breaking social app and digital advertising platform that has a zero tolerance on hate. It has a visionary new business model that values and pays users (with donations being made to charities) for their time watching ads.

Since March, we have announced WeAre8’s investment from Channel 4 and Centerstone Capital as part of a $15m Series B funding round, helping to support the platform’s ambition to transform digital advertising. We’ve also secured further coverage following the announcement of WeAre8’s crowdfunding, which saw it extend its Series B with UKTV and launch a Crowdcube round to empower people to own social media of the future.

By amplifying these announcements and working with WeAre8’s key investor and ambassador, Rio Ferdinand, for profile opportunities, we managed to secure over 50 pieces of coverage during the first quarter on the likes of BBC Breakfast, TechCrunch, Business Insider and Evening Standard with a reach of over 243M.

Cultivated meat at the House of Commons

We attended an event held in Parliament last week, where our client, Ivy Farm Technologies, laid out the need for a more agile regulatory process, and greater investment in research in the UK’s cultivated meat sector, to avoid missing out on its economic and environmental benefits.

Hosted alongside Anthony Browne MP and The Good Food Institute, the event was attended by MPs from across all parties, eager to learn more about the technology and discuss the need for regulatory reform to enable the UK to grasp the opportunity to become a ‘world-leader’ in the burgeoning alternative protein space. You can read the thoughts of Dr Russ Tucker, Ivy Farm co-founder, on the subject in this recent piece we secured with The Guardian.
